Total Solar Eclipse

What is a Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is wholly or partially obscured by the moon. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth.

At least two and up to five solar eclipses occur each year on Earth. Total solar eclipses are rare at any location because during each eclipse totality exists only along a narrow corridor on earth in the relatively tiny area of the Moon's umbra. A total solar eclipse is a spectacular natural phenomenon and many people travel to remote locations to observe one.

In ancient times, and in some cultures today, solar eclipses have been attributed to supernatural causes, as the Sun seems to disappear in the middle of the day and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes.

August 1, 2008 Total Solar Eclipse:

The total eclipse will be visible in the northern and eastern parts of North America, Greenland and northern Europe.

The sky gazers in India will miss an opportunity to watch a total solar eclipse on August 1 as the phenomena would only be partially visible in the country.

"The partial eclipse will be seen in the north-eastern region, starting from about 4 PM. In parts, northern India people will have a clear look of the eclipse, provided the sky is cloud free,” Director of Nehru Planetarium, Rathnasree, said.

Timing of Eclipse in various Regions of the World:

* 08:04 UTC (GMT) - Beginning of the general eclipse
* 09:23 UTC (GMT) or 04:23 local time- Total Solar Eclipse begins in northern Canada (Nunavut) (GMT-05)
* 09:30 UTC (GMT) or 07:30 local time- northern Greenland (GMT-02)
* 10:00 UTC (GMT) or 14:00 (02pm) local time- Novaya Zemlya (GMT+04)
* 10:10 UTC (GMT) or 16:10 (04:10pm) local time - reaching mainland of Russia (GMT+06)
* 10:21 UTC (GMT) or 16:21 (04:21pm) local time - greatest eclipse near Nadym (GMT+06)
* 10:45 UTC (GMT) or 17:45 (05:45pm) local time - Novosibirsk, Russia (GMT+07)
* 10:48 UTC (GMT) or 17:48 (05:48pm) local time - Barnaul, Russia (GMT+07)
* 10:57 UTC (GMT) or 18:57 (06:57pm) Mongolia time - Russia-Mongolia border (Mongolia time GMT+08)
* 10:59 UTC (GMT) or 18:59 (06:59pm) local time - Altay, China (GMT+08)
* 11:10 UTC (GMT) or 19:10 (07:10pm) local time - near Hami, China (GMT+08)
* 11:15 UTC (GMT) or 19:15 (07:15pm) local time - Jiuquan, China (GMT+08)
* 11:20 UTC (GMT) or 19:20 (07:20pm) local time - near Xi'an, China (GMT+08)
* 11:20 UTC (GMT) or 19:20 (07:20pm) local time - Eclipse ends (GMT+08)
* 12:38 UTC (GMT) - End of the general eclipse

The eclipse will begin at 1.34 p.m. when the shadow of the moon will first touch the earth and will end at 6.08 p.m. when the moon's shadow leaves the earth at sunset near a point in the Bay of Bengal close to Andaman Nicobar Islands, the release said.

The eclipse can be viewed from all over the country. In Delhi, the eclipse will start at 4:03 PM and end at 5:56 PM. It will be at its maximum at 5:02 PM.

In Mumbai it will from 4:27 PM to 6:03 PM, while in Chennai it will be visible from 4:40 PM to 6:07 PM and in Kolkata it will be seen between 4:18 PM and 6:02 PM where it will be relatively free from cloud cover.

The southern parts of India will see between 20-40 per cent of the diameter of the sun, while the northern parts of the country will see between 40-70 per cent of the diameter of the sun, at maximum of the solar eclipse.

Precautions and Warning:

According to the experts viewing the eclipse with naked eyes would be very dangerous. What is still more dangerous is viewing the Sun through a telescope or a pair of binoculars without a proper filter as it could destroy the eyesight.

The safest way of viewing a partial solar eclipse is through the method of projection. If you do not have access to a telescope or a pair of binoculars with which you can make this set-up for projection, an easy method will be to use a kitchen "channi" that has very small perforations.

However, if one wants to capture the moment, one should not use the viewfinder of the camera to look at the Sun, but only see the LCD display to check that the camera is aimed at the Sun, use the maximum of zoom possible.

NASA to provide live coverage:

The solar eclipse, which is to take place tomorrow, can be seen by viewers around the world, including India, as NASA, the US space agency has made arrangements to telecast live images of the rare celestial event.

NASA in partnership with the Exploratorium Science Centre, San Francisco, and the University of California at Berkeley, will transmit coverage of the total eclipse in a live streaming webcast.

NASA TV will cover the eclipse, to be visible in parts of Canada, northern Greenland, the Arctic, central Russia, Mongolia and China, from 1530 IST to 1745 IST.

The coverage will originate from China, considered one of the best observation locations because of the weather conditions there.

Viewers all across the globe can see the eclipse as it happens on NASA TV and by logging on to www.nasa.gov.

NASA coverage will feature views from telescopes and a live educational show during the eclipse.

The next solar eclipse, a partial one, will occur on January 26, 2009, but the phenomenon will be marginally visible from eastern and southern India.

Voice of India-Ishmeet drowns

In a very tragic turn of events the winner of 'Voice of India' singing contest, Ishmeet Singh, died under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday by "drowning" in a swimming pool in Male, the capital of the Maldives.

The second year Bachelor of Commerce student of MNC College, Mumbai, had gone to the pool for frolicking, but fell into its deep end leading to his drowning, said the hotel official.

The 19-year-old singer hailing from a middle-class family in Ludhiana, Punjab had gone to Maldives for a promotional event with the music company with which he had a contract.

Relatives at Ishmeet's residence here said the family was informed telephonically by the music company officials that Ishmeet died while swimming in a hotel pool in the Maldives.

Relatives, friends and admirers of the singer made a beeline to his house even as his shocked parents tried to come to terms with the untimely tragedy. A pall of gloom descended on the locality.

Ishmeet had Nov 26 last year won the 'Voice of India' singing contest, pipping his closest rival Harshit from Uttar Pradesh in a keen contest. He was given the winner's trophy by legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar herself.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said the country had lost a 'gem' and a 'void had been created in the music world that would be hard to fill'.

People in the film and music industry with whom Ismeet had associated were shocked by the news of his death.

Ishmeet's death plunged the music world into mourning and leading playback singers Lata Mangeshkar and Abhijeet and Shaan expressed shock at the incident.

"I was very happy when he won the Voice of India contest. Such a fate to befall one at such a young age -- I have no words to express my feelings," said Lata.

She said Ishmeet had an original voice and did not imitate anyone.

Reminds one the song which says" there are flowers which never even got a chance to bloom ...

May he rest in peace

cuil kill google

Cuil is pronounced cool and is an old Irish word for knowledge.

This search engine has been launched by ex Google engineers and they are planning to outdo their parent and mother of all search engines " Google".

Will cuil succeed or not only time will tell. Changing net surfers habits is not such an easy task. The would-be Google rival says its service goes beyond prevailing search techniques that focus on Web links and audience traffic patterns and instead analyzes the context of each page and the concepts behind each user search request.

"Our significant breakthroughs in search technology have enabled us to index much more of the Internet, placing nearly the entire Web at the fingertips of every user," Tom Costello, Cuil co-founder and chief executive, said in a statement.

Danny Sullivan, a Web search analyst and editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land, said Cuil can try to exploit complaints consumers may have with Google -- namely, that it tries to do too much, that its results favor already popular sites, and that it leans heavily on certain authoritative sites such as Wikipedia.

"The time may be right for a challenger," Sullivan says, but adds quickly: "Competing with Google is still a very daunting task, as Microsoft will tell you."

Cuil has indexed a whopping 120 billion Web pages, three times more than what they say Google now indexes, Patterson said, adding the company has spent just $5 million,

Google itself preemptively responded to Cuil's arrival with a blog post on Friday boasting of the growing scale of its own Web search operations.

Initially, Cuil is optimized for American English. Later this year, the company plans to enable Cuil users to perform searches in major European languages, Patterson said. Eventually, Cuil plans to make money by running ads alongside search results, she said, but provided no further details.

Cuil is one of a number of start-ups that are looking to introduce new technology that can change the competitive dynamics of the Web search market that Google dominates.

Although I must say that even established players like Yahoo, Microsoft and Ask.com -- all of whom have established quality search products -- haven't dented Google either.

So what makes Cuil worthy of special attention? There are four major areas that Cuil is putting out to distinguish itself from other services. These are:

* Big web index
* Unique relevance algorithm
* Unique results display
* Privacy

It's possible that Cuil could be a wild success that eclipses Yahoo and Microsoft and does threaten Google itself, of course. Anything's possible, only time will tell.

Ahmadabad Blasts

After Banglore blasts yesterday terror struck Gujarat capital Ahmadabad today when 17 serial bomb blasts ripped across the city tonight leaving 38 dead and over 100 injured sending a wave of panic. The old method of blasts using bicycles and tiffins were used. Both the states have BJP governments.

The Ahmadabad blasts were synchronised explosions which took place in the space of 90 minutes in the eastern and western areas after the first blast hit Maninagar at 6.45 pm . There were two blasts each in Maninagar--the constituency of Chief Minister Narendra Modi--and in Sarkej targetting a state transport CNG bus and Sangam theatre.

Significantly two hospitals were also the target of attack.

Mangled remains of a bus, cycles, motorcycles and an autorickshaw were seen at the blast sites which was splattered with blood and panic spread as people ran for their lives.

Doctors at Vadilal Sarabhai hospital said 12 people died while there were several seriously injured persons receiving treatment.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has convened a high level meeting tomorrow morning to review the security situation throughout the country.

Additional forces and expert teams have been sent to Gujarat to aid the police force and the state government. Union home secratary Gupta also said while there were no specific intelligent inputs, all states had been alerted a couple of days ago. “We sent an advisory to various states and the in the next few days, I will call another meeting of all state DGs to discuss what it means,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Affairs Shakeel Ahmed also expressed shock. "We are surprised and shocked. Yesterday, it was Banglore. Today it is Ahmedabad. This happened even after the government of India issued high alerts to all sensitive states. We condemn the blast," he said.

"If they need any assistance, the government of India will provide it," Ahmed said. Asked about the claims of Indian Mujahiddin, a recently formed terror outfit, about triggering off the blasts, the minister said a report was pending. "We will give a detailed report after analyzing the state government's report. Let the state government report come first,” he said.

Ahmadabad bomb blasts coming just a day after Bangalore blasts indicates the motives and the wide spread net of terror organizations in India. Spreading terror and creating panic across the country the Ahmadabad bomb blasts are a clear attack on the countries financial centers.
Terrorist organizations Huji-Lashkar have claimed the responsibility for the blasts. After todays bomb blasts in Ahmadabad the whole country has been put on high alert.

Nayanthara mms clip link

There is a mms clip floating around the net claimed by many to be of the south indian actress Nayanthara. The actress meanwhile has filed a police complaint alleging that her rivals are circulating a fake MMS clip showing Nayanthara in a compromising pose with Tamil actor Simbu.

“This is the work of rivals, jealous of my fame and bankability on the eve of the August release of ‘Kuselan’ and ‘Sathyam,’ both big budget ventures,” Nayanthara was quoted as saying.

Nayanthara was rumoured to be romantically linked with Shimbu but she claims that she has a “friendly relationship” with him, and nothing more.

According to sources, the allegedly morphed MMS clip took its origin in Tiruchirappalli, and has been widely circulated since then.

Earlier, actresses Trisha, Jyothika and Namitha have been victims of such fake MMS clips, according to industry sources.

The police has registered a case but no arrests have been made so far. We will soon find out Whether the Nayanthara mms clip is real or fake but by then it would have done its damage to the standing of the actress.

You can check out the Nayanthara mms clip link at this site and decide for yourself its authenticity.

Banglore Blasts

The Indian tech hub and growing business center Bangalore was rocked with seven low-intensity bomb blasts on Friday afternoon killing one woman and injuring nine people. The Bangalore bomb blasts put a big question mark on the security situation in India.

Bangalore City Police Commissioner Shankar M Bidari and Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta confirmed that seven blasts shook Bangalore.

The first blast took place near Madiwala checkpost at around 1330 hrs IST with Additional Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, Gopal Hosur, confirming that a timer device was used to trigger the blasts.

All the blasts took place with 15 minutes of each other.

The crude bombs, stuffed with nuts and bolts, exploded at Madiwala, Adugodi, Nayandahalli, Pantharapalya and Vittal Mallya Road.

The woman who was killed was waiting at a bus stop in Madiwala on the Bangalore-Hosur Road while her husband and another person were seriously injured.

Police claim to have recovered gelatin sticks, mainly used in quarry operations, from one of the blast sites.

Bomb disposal squads have been rushed to the blast sites and telephone network have been jammed to stop the spread of rumours.

Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar M Bidari said, "We are monitoring the situation and request all residents to continue with their normal routine. The bomb squad and explosives experts are on the spot. We will deal with the situation."

All the injured have been taken to Mallya Hospital near Rajaram Mohan Rai circle.

Bangalore was rocked by a major terrorist attack in December, 2005 when some unidentified extremists opened fire in the Indian Institute of Science complex killing an Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi professor MC Puri.

Bomb disposal squads and forensic experts have rushed to the blast spots for investigations. Bangalore bomb blasts have scared the residents of the city and a general feeling of insecurity is prevailing. Blasts in Bangalore once again prove the deficiency of Indian intelligence and police which fail to anticipate and prevent such dastardly criminal terrorist acts.

Stunning Animal attack videos

Even trained and domesticated animals can be unpredicatable as these videos show. For all of you who poke and tease animals this should be a fair warning.

Warning: These videos are really graphic and violent so faint hearted please refrain from viewing them.

In this other video the elephant takes out its pent up frustration on its trainer cum owner. Moral of the story: don't tease something with a trunk cause it can boot you.

How people think they are very brave if they can play around with lions. Remember all those movies where the villain or his henchman has a puma or a cheetah on a leash. Well this poor guy also thought that it will make him look brave if he would pet this lion. Unfortunately the lion had other ideas.

So guys don't pet your pet too much it might just spring a surprise on you.

Google to buy Digg for $200 million

Internet search leader Google has signed a letter of intent with Digg to purchase the social news site for around $200 million.

A report said the deal would be finalized within two weeks and that Digg would continue to operate as part of the Google News operation, which already runs one of the most popular news sites on the web.

In contrast to Google News, where the stories are selected by computer algorithm, Digg's news stories are submitted by users and ranked according to user approval ratings. The report said that Google was interested in using Digg's technology to help improve its search results by having users vote on their quality.

Digg was formed in 2004 by entrepreneur Kevin Rose who used a programmer he found online for $10 an hour. He paid $1,200 dollars for the domain name and $100 a month for hosting the site, which is now ranked as one of the 100 most trafficked sites on the internet.

Digg has so far raised $11.3 million in venture capital. Most of Digg's revenue comes from a three-year ad deal with google rival Microsoft, which will be terminated on a sale to Google.

The incredible Motorbike show

This is an incredible performance by the Italian police bikers. The performance and the choreography of these motorbike daredevils is amazing. This requires the precision of a surgeon and the courageous heart. One wrong move by any one rider could have caused an accident. There timing and precision defy words. Only seeing is believing.

All about Tata Nano

Nano means small, infact very small. This is one of the most awaited new car in the world at the moment. Tata’s Nano has created quite a flutter in the auto world because of its design and price.

The Nano will be launched in India later in 2008. The car will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. Both versions will offer a wide range of body colours, and other accessories so that the car can be customised to an individual's preferences.

The Nano has a max speed of 100 kph and fuel average of about 22 kpl.

Leg Room

The car is smaller in overall dimensions than the Maruti, but it offers about 20% more seating capacity as a result of design choices such as putting the wheels at the extreme edges of the car.

- Designed with a family in mind, the Nano has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room. It is going to be a little cramped in the rear seat for an adult, but a small family with kids in the back seat would be a perfect fit.

- Can seat four persons. Four doors with high seating position make getting in and out easy

- The dimensions of the Nano are; length of 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, with adequate ground clearance. Makes it easy to park and handle in city traffic

- Its mono-volume design, with wheels at the corners and the powertrain at the rear, enables it to uniquely combine both space and maneuverability.

Fuel-efficiency

- The claimed mileage for Nano is 22 Kms to a liter.

- The Nano has a rear-wheel drive, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft.

- The lean design strategy has helped minimise weight, which helps maximise performance per unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency.

- Performance is controlled by a specially designed electronic engine management system.

Safety requirements

- The Nano's safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements. With an all sheet-metal body, it has a strong passenger compartment, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body.

- Tubeless tyres further enhance safety.

Environment-friendly

- The Nano's tailpipe emission performance exceeds regulatory requirements. In terms of overall pollutants, it has a lower pollution level than two-wheelers being manufactured in India today.

- The high fuel efficiency also ensures that the car has low carbon dioxide emissions, thereby providing the twin benefits of an affordable transportation solution with a low carbon footprint.

Suggestion

If you are driving a Maruti Suzuki product like an 800 or an Alto and are thinking of switching over to the Nano, I would suggest you to sell your vehicle now because once the Nano is available the prices of these used cars are bound to fall significantly. Although Alto and Maruti 800 have their own advantages and are fuel efficient and tried and tested work horses.

Sex mistakes men make

Every guy has his own notion of what women want. Most of the ill conceived notions are either tips from pals or what you have read/imagined/seen in movies. Unfortunately most guys get it wrong where women are concerned. A sex slip-up just isn’t sexy. It can ruin a relationship much less the fun of the moment.

Yet lovers make mistakes all the time when making love, blundering in bed without a clue as to what is going wrong.

Although both genders are guilty of sexual errors, here are some of the miscalculations that men make.

Whether it's titillation tactics, misjudging erogenous zones or misguided notions as to what women want, guys, you need to avoid the following bedroom bloopers if you want to become hot in the sack.

1. Foreplay does not begin in the sack. The time for enticing does not start once you are between the sheets. Your pre-game show is best approached as an all day affair. Women love to be wooed. Sex is a head game — in more ways than one — and women want to know you can’t get them out of your mind. We love knowing that we are desired.

Men, whether your plan is to “get some,” rev up her engine or bring her to fast orgasm, your strategy should begin long before you enter the bedroom.

This isn’t necessarily because women need a lot of time to get warmed up. Given that a couple of my girlfriends can attain an orgasm in a minute or two, at least by themselves, my sense is that the "statistic" that women need an average 20 minutes of foreplay before penetration tends to be overused.

Begin by just looking at her in that certain way, you know the glint in the eye which sends her a signal of your desire. Brush against her when you walk past. Kiss the back of her neck or just embrace her during the day. I know it is difficult for those of us who want to begin and and end the game in the sack, but believe me the pleasure will multiply many fold even for you through these small gestures as it heightens your anticipation.

2. Don't rush south too soon. Do not “pass go and collect $200.” Diving in for the genitals too soon usually isn’t the best idea. A woman needs to be properly aroused before any below-the-belt action feels good.

Be sure to focus on her entire body — head to toe — before going for the gold. There is so much of her from the top of hear head to the tip of the toe. Explore and enjoy giving pleasure.

3. Are you ignoring the clitoris? Many men think a woman’s orgasmic ability is due to penetration. Yes, there is certainly pleasure in this part of the performance, but the belle of the ball is being left out of the party.

More than 70 percent of women experience clitoral orgasm when it comes to maximum reaction, so men need to make sure they are not ignoring the clitoris. It also helps if you actually know where the clitoris is located — some have been known to rub the urethral opening, which can be a big no-no for some ladies.

Just in case you are lost ask the lady to guide you there. She is sure to cooperate.

4. Are we missing the G spot. In digging for buried treasure, many guys don’t know that “X” doesn’t always mark the spot. Found on the front wall of the vagina, a woman’s G spot may be a little higher or lower, or more to one side than the other, than often depicted.

Its size may also vary, from as small as a pea to as large as a quarter. Let me give you a hint: she needs to be aroused before you even have a prayer of finding it.

5. Don't Become too goal-oriented in your efforts. There is nothing more endearing than a man who wants to play. Just don’t get caught up in yourself. Your sexual exploration should be playtime for two.

Stay “present” in the moment – connecting with your partner will bring the ultimate climax to both of you.

6. Gaining weight and still thinking you're attractive. "For better or worse” should include weight fluctuations, but don’t let yourself go completely.

You don’t know how many women have complained about the double standard in staying attractive: Women are expected to stay hot-to-trot, men aren’t.

So if you want continued star treatment for your rock star performances, know that Meat Loaf isn’t the singer to emulate.

7. Not knowing about her need to be naughty. Sometimes she needs to get in touch with her adulterated side. In fact, research has found that women are more aroused by explicit fantasies than romantic ones. Forget the prince on a white horse or canoodling on the beach.

Many women enjoy all sorts of erotica. Don’t be afraid to play up her far-from-virtuous visual nature.

8. Thinking she's supposed to act like a porn star. Most men want to know how to get their lover to do something specific in bed.

As seen in porn films, many men expect their lovers to fulfill their every fantasy. Remember that porn is fantasy, not reality. Expecting her to act like a porn star is simply not fair.

9. Thinking you're supposed to look like a porn star. Despite what XXX-rated films indicate, most women are not lusting after the three-legged man. The big package deal doesn’t do it for most.

Most ladies I discussed this issue with crossed their legs and overall consensus on "larger than life" was: “What are you supposed to do with that?”

Maybe some women are up for the challenge, but many are fine with the guy who fits within the norm. Don’t be too hard on yourself for being just that.

10. Believing one orgasm is enough. She’s just had a mind-blowing orgasm, maybe two. So she should be perfectly content, right? Wrong.

Women are not nearly as quick to come down from their aroused state as men are post-sex. Many can be launched right back to bliss, and many women do crave more action and orgasms, even if they were perfectly satisfied by the first sexperience.

Even if you’re exhausted, don’t rule out Round 2. There are other ways of pleasing her, so go ahead and do it all over again.

Billionaire gives it all to Dogs

Whoever said "its was a dogs life" had no clue about Leona Helmsley and her billions.

She is the billionaire New York hotelier and real estate magnate and she left millions to her beloved dog, Trouble, not only that, she left billions for the care of dogs in general.

Helmsley left instructions that an entire charitable trust valued at close to $8 billion and amounting to virtually all of her estate, be used for the care and welfare of dogs.

She had two goals set in her will when she made it in 2003. The two goals set in her will were to help indigent people and the to provide for the care and welfare of dogs. But a year later, she deleted the first goal. Don't you wish you were a dog rather than destitute.

Helmsley, was known as "the Queen of Mean" because of the way she dealt with her employees, but she had a soft spot for her dog. But a New York court last month lowered the dog's inheritance to $2 million from $12 million on grounds that Helmsley was mentally unfit when she made her will.

Helmsley died in August 2007 at age 87. She amassed a fortune in real estate and hotels with her husband, Harry Helmsley, who died in 1997.

Famously quoted as having said "only the little people pay taxes," Helmsley spent 18 months in federal prison for evading $1.7 million in taxes in 1989. Now taxes are used for human welfare and she was a dog person.

I think we will have to change the quote from "its a dogs life" "to its a destitute's life".
